The most important aspect of stained glass is the glass itself. Glass is composed mainly of sand, and silica. It is heated to a temperature of 2000 degrees, until it is the consistency of taffy. The colors are caused by the addition of metallic oxides. The glass does not have a pigment in it like oil paints. Since there are no pigments, there is nothing to fade. The color of glass will be as brilliant 700 years from now as it is today.
Once the glass is cooled, it is then cut. Sharp edges are grinded off to allow the copper foil to adhere to the glass. The pieces of the project are then soldered together. All residue is removed and then waxed to a high shine.
The finished pieces are now desirable decorative, personal and religious items, for oneself or as lasting gifts.
